Centre For Local Research into Public Space (CELOS)
My son, now 16 and well over 6 feet, applied for a job as a rink guard last fall. He filled out all the forms, jumped through all the hoops. He has his Red Cross First Aid, has worked at a tennis camp for youth, has babysat extensively, has skated since he was 2, plays house league hockey and has excellent references. He never heard back, and was pretty disappointed. Then he went skating at our local rink (Hodgson). The risk guards on duty couldn’t skate. They were on their phones. Throughout the season, they closed the rink early due to bad weather, or because “nobody was there”.
