Art in the park: ice sculptures

back to Jutta's Blog main page

A park friend sent this story, which starts badly but ends with a happier twist:

I was hanging an ice- shape; I make and hang many; from a tree in the park about a month ago; and a young fellow in a black outfit, that said Garda, came hustling over, with a cig in his hand, to reprimand me, and tell me that this object was a dangerous hazard in the wind; and had to be removed.

he did not say who he was; or that he had some authority

I asked him to put out his cigarette; which he threw into the grass

I was pissed at him, and after a few minutes of tough discussion, he cut down my piece and marched off to the rink house with it. I followed, demanding my "work of art" back

at the door to their office, he said
if you step in here, I will call the police

I retreated, and asked one of the staff to call a supervisor, who arrived a bit later
He was nice to me, calm, said how he liked my pieces, but that I should hang them away from the paths.
I asked for my piece back

he said it had been destroyed; the authoritative "security guard" had taken it to the bathroom and destroyed it.

Later, he must have destroyed another that was cut down in the park.

So too much security is a nuisance!!

The next day, while hanging a piece instead at Wychwood barns, some community dads who were flooding the rink were so excited at my piece, asked how I did it, and asked me to hang more
and then when I went by a few days later, they and other kids had made many similar pieces that they had hung as art, around the rink.
So much nicer for my pieces to be greeted as a joy vs as a hazard!!
