Proposal for the City of Toronto to Integrate Recommendations by Ripple Community Collective

Introduction to Ripple Community Collective

Ripple Community Collective is a Toronto-based grassroots organization committed to fostering collaboration among local artists, entrepreneurs, small businesses, natural health practitioners, community advocates, and neighborhood organizations. By promoting cooperative efforts and mutual aid, Ripple aims to create a ripple effect of positive change, focusing on pressing community challenges such as homelessness, food insecurity, and human rights advocacy.

Through shared resources, co-promotion, and collective support, Ripple seeks to connect marginalized communities with organizations and services that provide essential relief and support. The collective’s human-rights-based approach emphasizes care, compassion, and community empowerment, building stronger, more united neighborhoods.

As part of its ongoing efforts to support vulnerable populations in Toronto, Ripple Community Collective has developed a series of actionable recommendations tailored to address urgent community needs at Dufferin Grove Park. This proposal outlines these recommendations and their potential benefits, aiming for their integration into the City of Toronto’s community support strategies.

Recommendations

1. Enhancing Porta Potties and Sanitation Facilities

Action Items:

Ensure existing porta potties are serviced regularly, fully stocked with sanitizer, soap, and a functioning handwashing station.

Add two additional porta potties to accommodate increased usage.

Impact: This measure will improve hygiene and reduce health risks for individuals relying on these facilities. Enhanced sanitation promotes dignity and reduces the spread of illness, particularly during colder months.

2. Access to Laundry Services

Action Items:

Provide biweekly access to laundry services at Dufferin Grove Park.

Impact: Regular laundry access helps maintain personal hygiene, improves overall well-being, and reduces the stigma experienced by vulnerable populations.

3. Access to Electricity

Action Items:

Turn on existing electrical outlets or extend their operating hours to allow community members access to electricity for charging devices and other essential needs.

Impact: This step ensures access to vital communication tools and contributes to the safety and well-being of individuals.

4. Firewood and Fire Safety Training

Action Items:

Deliver firewood to the south side fire pit.

Provide fire-tending training to ensure safety and proper usage of fire pits.

Impact: Access to firewood and fire safety education will provide warmth, reduce health risks associated with cold exposure, and foster a sense of community among park users.

5. Temporary Indoor Warming Center

Action Items:

Provide nightly access to indoor space within the Dufferin Grove Recreation Center for use as a temporary warming center during colder months.

Impact: This measure will offer critical relief for individuals experiencing homelessness, protecting them from extreme weather conditions and reducing health risks.

6. Canopy Shelter for Donations

Action Items:

Install a canopy shelter near the south side fire pit to house donated items and provide shelter for individuals.

Impact: A covered space ensures donations are protected from the elements and provides a safe area for individuals to gather and access essential resources.

7. Storage Tent for Supplies

Action Items:

Set up a storage tent to hold first aid supplies, hygiene products, non-perishable foods, and other essential items.

Impact: Organized storage ensures accessibility and security of critical resources for those in need.

8. Winterizing Tents

Action Items:

Provide insulation for existing tents to make them suitable for winter conditions.

Impact: Winterized tents offer better protection against harsh weather, improving safety and comfort for individuals relying on them.

9. Access to Kitchen Facilities

Action Items:

Grant weekly or biweekly access to the kitchen at the recreation center.

Provide daily access to a microwave for warming food. Impact: Access to kitchen facilities ensures individuals can prepare or warm meals, contributing to improved nutrition and overall well-being.

10. Warm Food and Drink Deliveries

Action Items:

Coordinate regular deliveries of warm food and drinks to individuals at the park.

Impact: Warm meals and beverages provide immediate relief during colder months, boosting physical and emotional well-being.

Ripple Community Collective’s holistic, human-rights-based approach ensures that these measures will foster dignity, safety, and well-being for all community members.

We look forward to working closely with the City of Toronto to bring these solutions to life. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change, uplifting marginalized communities and building a more compassionate city.
