Recently there has been controversy about campfires in city parks. After a recent campfire at Campbell park, organized by Duffern Grove park staff (quite enjoyed by the partygoers!) Parks and Recreations staff started having reservations about issuing permits for campfires at city parks. There have been many twists and turns in this story and it's much easier if you read the story on the Dufferin Grove website. The latest seems to be that campfires at Dufferin Grove will be eventually allowed to proceed, with some extra bureacratic red tape compared to before -- but don't take my word for it!
However, Parks and Recs seem to be much more reluctant to allow campfires at other parks, such as the lovely campfire we had on November 26 last year. For our parkette in particular, the concern seems to be potential damage to the Bloor-Danforth subway line that runs under the parkette. From this picture of our campfire, it's hard to imagine how the subway line could be harmed.
Many of the people who came to our event in November said that this was exactly the kind of event that the neighbourhood needed, and that more events like this should be organized to strengthen our community. If you agree, please let us know! You can send us emails supporting campfires at city parks in general (and Susan Tibaldi parkette in particular), or any other thoughts you might have on the matter.
