Garden Spring 2013

Youth gardeners at Work

The Campbell Garden Recreational Gardeners included a wide mix of youth, parents with children and adults. The garden was the hard work of Lucy , who handed the torch to Marina to keep the garden alive and the recreational gardeners engaged. The lively group of regulars included 2 pre-teen boys, a lot of pre-teen girls, three moms with children ranging from aged two to aged eleven, a family of four, a dog walker, and a ph.d. Occasionally some basket ball players would pop in to check on our progress and discover that there is more to lettuce than the iceberg used in fast food restaurants on burgers!

This year we grew corn which made it to a Saturday Supper Soup; made a lovely pesto which was used on pizza, broccoli which was frozen and served in a soup on the first day of Rink Season; exotic lettuce which we used in our salads during the summer; tomatoes which we canned and shared with neighbours.

The program included two canning workshops: Tomato chutney which was served at the rink during the first two weeks as a popular hotdog topping.

Pickling cucumbers donated by Campbell Garden Participant Allison and grown locally in our grow bags were turned into many jars, and are to be found in the Campbell Rink Fridge adding a crunchy option to the menu and probably will be gobbled up soon.

You cannot eat more locally than the Campbell Park ten foot diet garden!

Though the weather outside is frightful Rink staff managed to save the mint, rosemary and some exotic greens.
