'The Garden Update'

Garden Workshops

Tomatoes

We had some great luck as our tomatoes came back on their own. Soon these lovely little plants will require staking. Our gardening hours start late in the season in June and to get tomatoes from seed we would have had to start in March!

The local tweens popped in and helped put some plants in and we transferred a couple from the front garden to a new spot. Lots of digging, watering and planting. The girls enjoyed digging into the grow bags and we will watch our squash seeds turn into large plants with hopefully delicious results. The squash seeds were from a giant squash used at Night of Dread.

Then park neighbour Mike and his two youngsters dropped in to put some blackberry bushes into the ground. Lots of seedlings went into the front garden and hopefully we will have blackberries this summer.

All in all a productive week in our small garden. The plants are all flourishing nicely, with the donated chives flowering adding a lovely touch to the grow bag. Both the mint and red lettuce from the grow bag graced our Saturday Supper.

The gardening program at Campbell park will be incorporating raised beds to grow vegetables, herbs, decorative and edible flowers.

Do I need to register?

No, our hands-on workshops are city-run free drop-in programs

for groups

What will happen at the workshops?

We will be learning about and using intensive gardening, inter-cropping and companion planting to increase yield in a small gardening plot.

Wear comfortable clothing and a hat.

Light refreshments will be available at each session.

What happens to the food?

Some will be harvested and eaten on the spot by locavores and some will be incorporated into the weekly Saturday Supper Program.

How can I get involved?

A larger group from a school, daycare, or club should email to let us know they want to come so we can figure out how to accommodate them. Great for after school programs, seniors groups, families, single people and those wanting a drop-in garden workshop to learn a little more. Our programming links to various curriculum including social studies, civics, science, art and environmental studies.
